SHC Walk Programme
After two years of ad-hoc planning, we have returned to a six-month programme of walks. This page has an indicative 'look ahead' to coming walks. Members are informed of the walk programme via email, along with route info and booking info for upcoming walks. Prior booking with the Walk Organiser is essential.
In 2023 we celebrated our fortieth year, as we formed in 1983. As a club we like to visit hills in a variety of settings, and not just the nearby Ochils: the Trossachs, Glencoe, the Pentlands, the Arrochar 'Alps' and the Crianlarich hills. For example, since January 2023, the club has had walks that include Ben Vane, Buachaille Etive Beag, Touch Hills, Ben Vrackie, Meall Ghaordaidh and others.
The SHC Facebook page has up to date walk reports and photos of our exploits, near and far.

Walk details – start locations and times etc. – will be sent out to club members in the week preceding the respective walks, along with Walk Organiser contact to book a place. Planned walks are subject to change due to considerations of weather.
The walks are graded, for example 1/2, the first number relating to the technical difficulty and the second number to the terrain. Each category is graded in a range 1 (easiest) to 4 (hardest) and is given as a guide only.
Walkers on harder walks, i.e. more severe than grade 1/1 should be physically fit and have some hill walking experience. If in any doubt, prospective walkers should discuss these aspects with the walk leader.
Please take into account any comments the walk leader has made in the walk description regarding pace.
Technical Difficulty
- Mostly not too steep
- Appreciable steep sections
- Some handwork required
- Scramble in parts
Terrain
- Good paths or tracks for the most part
- Reasonable, some paths or tracks but also some roughish areas
- Fair, but few tracks and paths and also rough pathless areas
- Hard going over mainly rough pathless ground
e.g. a grade ‘1/2’ equates to a “Mostly not too steep. Fair, but few tracks and paths and also rough pathless areas.”
